Sony has a few 3D cameras available for purchase, and the Sony HX10 is one of the newest to hit the streets. This 3D camera is absolutely full of features that will knock your socks off. Let’s just say all you need to do is push the shutter button and you’ll instantly have a professional-looking photo to share with friends and family. It basically does the work for you. Of course, you can customize the settings and tweak the light modes and shutter speeds, but the camera’s ability to automatically sense lighting levels, skin tone and more has earned it the TopTenREVIEWS Silver Award.

As previously mentioned, Sony’s HX10 is one of the newer 3D cameras Sony offers, and they have upgraded this new version from 16.2 to 18.2 megapixels with an optical zoom of 16x. The optical zoom and the f-stop statistics can be a little misleading because depending on which mode and setting the Sony HX10 is on, it will have a different aperture range. Suffice it to say, the focal length can go from 26 mm to 672 mm – well beyond the average 35 mm camera. The anti-blur technology combines a fast shutter speed, 1/1600, and a high sensitivity, ISO 3200, to capture instantaneous shots. The camera’s 18.2 megapixel resolution makes your images crisp and clear, capturing shots at 10 frames per second.

When recording video, you can expect the same excellent video quality as when taking pictures. The Sony HX10 can record HD 1080p video in AVCHD or MP4 file formats. From video mode you can also take still shots. HD videos, 3D images and 2D images can be saved on the internal memory, 19MB, or on an external SD card. Unfortunately, this 3D camera can’t record 3D video and the LCD screen is not touch-enabled.

Another downside to the Sony HX10 3D camera is that you can’t actually preview the 3D images on the camera’s 3-inch LCD monitor. You can view any of the HD videos or 2D pictures, but you’ll have to transfer any 3D images via the HDMI output or USB 2.0 port, to a 3D compatible device. In other words, if you don’t have a 3D compatible device, you will never be able to see your images in 3D.

Many 3D cameras boast red eye reduction, anti-blur technology and exposure correction, as does the Sony HX10. But not many can also say that they can enhance the subjects of your pictures. Sony has a soft skin mode that can distinguish the difference between skin tones and background content. When the soft skin mode is selected, the camera reduces blemishes, wrinkles and other skin imperfections without editing the background – no Photoshop needed. It also has a blink detection and will take two consecutive shots if someone blinks. Even more impressive, if the camera detects a blink when set on any other mode, it will produce a warning on your LCD screen so you can retake the picture.

These particular camera modes are in addition to several other options like landscape, night, portrait, beach, snow and more. One of our favorites is the Intelligent Scene Recognition (iSCN) Mode, which can detect up to 33 different scenes and choose the best camera settings for that environment. A GPS mode can even detect where in the world you are located, stamping your images with your location. Some cameras only have a date and time stamp; the Sony HX10 can pinpoint your location on Google maps.

Although decked out with some pretty fancy bells and whistles, this 3D camera does the basics as well. It will automatically turn off after a period of inactivity to save power, allows you to edit images in-camera and has a self-timer and a tripod socket. It weighs a measly 8.3 ounces and is compact enough to slide into your bag or pocket for easy access.
